goals you will give evidence to show that you understand what the performance
will look and feel like, what its duration will be and how you will engage with
it.
- You will also give evidence to show
understanding of health and safety implications associated with performing
music that take into account the context (place, people involved, audience etc.
) in which the performance is taking place.
Merit
- Explain your realistic
and achievable goals, which must relate to your aspirations and expectation of
the performance.
- There will be very
little tutor input into this undertaking.
- Based on your personal
goals you will give evidence to show that you have a clear understanding of
what the performance will look and feel like, what its duration will be and how
you will engage with it.
- You will also give
evidence to show a clear understanding of health and safety implications
associated with performing music that take into account the context (place,

Distinction
- Explain your realistic
and achievable goals, which must relate to your aspirations and expectation of
the performance. Take ownership of these goals.
- There will be little
or no tutor input into this undertaking.
- Based on your personal
goals you will give evidence to show that you have a clear understanding of
what the performance will look and feel like, what its duration will be and how
you will engage with it. Within this there will be strong evidence of
clear understanding of where potential issues may lie. Strategies for how these
may be overcome effectively will be in place.
- You will also give
evidence to show a clear understanding of health and safety implications
associated with performing music that take into account the context (place,
people involved, audience etc.) in which the performance is taking place. You
must show clear understanding of where issues may occur and how they may be
avoided.
Answer the following
questions in full sentences. Then check back to the grading criteria to see if you have met your
target grade:
1. My statement of personal aims:
Think about your
contribution to the event and answer the following questions.
a) What do you want to achieve through your
contribution (performance or compositions)?
I want to develop my timing skills by playing in a band, it is useful for me to be in a band because it is good practice for when i'm older if I decide to have a career in music or even just play gigs once I finish school. Being in a band in music practitioners gives me an opportunity to show commitment and teamwork skills. I wanted to be in a group in music practitioners because I know it'll force me to work hard and progress my drumming skills to keep up with the rest of the group. This is helpful for me because I can be unmotivated to break out of bad habits in drumming and I used to tend to stick to the same beat or fills for a while as I'd get comfortable and get into a rut. As a musician I want to be deliberate and varied with my playing, I know that I can achieve this if I put the work in and practice most days.

Through my contribution
to the event I would like to achieve the following goals:
- Progress my drumming skills and variety by becoming more deliberate in what I play and not let myself go on autopilot.
- Learn how to work in a band and develop my timing by working with other people.
- Learn to commit and be motivated to drumming consistently so I can improve each time I play.
b) What skills do you
have that you can use?
I have been playing the drums since a young age and have taken it seriously ever since, this means I can focus on more advanced techniques as I have the basics nailed down. This means I can aim for the higher grades and play more advanced songs that suit my guitarist. This makes it easier for us to have a good dynamic of working because we are clear in how we can learn. We practice our songs solo at home and then work on timing and playing together in practical lessons. We also chose songs that Cameron would be able to play, this is so he doesn't get left behind learning something when we have moved on.
c) How will you know if you have achieved it?
I will know I have achieved this by using a questionnaire that I will provide to the audience to gage their opinion, this audience includes my peers and teachers. I will talk to my peers and teachers and see how they think we did and what I could do to achieve my aims. Personally, I can listen to a recording or video from the event and decide if I have achieved my aims and I will be able to be critical of my performance and I will be able to give myself constructive points of improvement that I will action on.
d) How will you meet the expectations of the
audience?
The audience will expect to be entertained and we will fulfil their expectations by putting on a good performance; a good performance to the audience means that I will meet their expectations by playing songs that are familiar to them or that can evoke feelings or memories of previous times they have heard the song. I will create nostalgic feelings by choosing well known songs that can appeal to every member of the audience. The audience will be made up of parents and students this means songs will elicit different emotions in the different age ranges which could be from 12 up to 50 meaning the time period my songs will be picked from is roughly around the last 20 years. A younger person might remember these songs as memories of early childhood maybe introduced to them first by radio, tv or parents. Whilst older people of the audience will remember them from maybe school or university which is remembered by many people as the best experience of their life.
2. Plan
of my contribution to the performance
a) What are the requirements of the brief and
how will you meet them?
The requirements of the brief is performing 15 minutes of music to a live audience. They will all want to be impressed so it is crucial that I give them 15 minutes of music that can display my skills. For them to be impressed they must enjoy the music or at least see the appeal, this may be difficult for me to find music that fits different A&Rs tastes because there will be a wide variety of ages in the audience. I have decided the best way for me to find music that will have something for all of them is to pick popular music that has been in the charts in recent history, the last 20 years or so. This will mean the music is familiar and it will ensure that most the audience will enjoy their time.

b) What do you intend to do?
I intend to practice every day on my drum kit at home for at least 30 mins and learn parts of songs, new fills, and anything I have found difficult in the lessons. I can use my metronome to practice my timing without being with my band. I will use music lessons to put what I have learnt at home and in drum lessons together with the rest of my band. This means even if our band does not meet outside of school we are still developing our songs and progressing; this works for us because together we have a tendency to mess around and not focus but alone I know that I can focus and get work done on the drums. This will ensure that we finish our 15 minutes of songs because we don't only have the music lessons we have the time at home too. Jack and I are at an advantage to other people who may not have their instrument at home which puts us in a better place leading up to the performance. Below I've included my Practice Schedule which I use to help me chose what to do and organise my playing but I do not follow the specific targets each day I chose which one would help me most that day.

c) How will you do it? E.g. rehearsals, work
with tutor, record self and listen back to it, dress rehearsal (week before)
etc.
I have been using backing tracks to song and using headphones whilst practicing on my drum kit, this helps my timing and playing along to something without having to work with anyone else. It also is good fun and a good way to get better at new things I am learning where I am able to make mistakes and try new things. I try to repeat everything I experiment with so I can play a bigger variety of fills and beats. I play almost everyday for half an hour at least and with my consistent playing I am always ready to play. I find that if I do not play for a week I get a bit clunky and slow which tends to put me in a rut where I lose my motivation. This makes it difficult for me to enjoy drumming and is the main reason why I practice a lot. In school music lessons I practice what I learn at home with the other members Cameron and Jack, this helps me solidify the songs I learn. In school drumming lessons I learn new things that I can practice at home. Such as new fills or ways to put the bass drum by using a + e method and reading music which is a skill I only recently acquired.

d) Who will you need to involve?
I will need to involve my band members including Cameron and Jack to play; my drum teacher as he is teaching me how to play songs and my technique, he especially helps me with my drumming ethic including practicing and working. My band and I will need stage engineers to make sure the amps and other equipment is working properly to ensure we will sound as good as we can. I will need my teacher to evaluate my work and help me improve my written and practical work to get my work to the best of my ability. Lastly I will need the audience also to evaluate my work but also appreciate and witness it.
e) What resources will you need?
f) What time is needed for each song/
activity (e.g. dress rehearsal/ recording)?
g) What are the health and safety issues for
rehearsals and the performances? (think of noise levels, cables, audience,
working with others)
My set list:
- Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication with Jack and Cameron
- Blur - Song 2 with Jack and Cameron
- Sublime - What I Got with Jack and Cameron
- Solo along to backing track? Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good?
- Solo along to backing track? Ian Dury? Babyshambles? Nirvana - In Bloom?
- Rage Against The Machine - Sleep Now in the Fire with Jack and Cameron
Style and Image:
As this is a A&R event taking place at school i will need to wear my school uniform and will not be able to change my clothes for the performance. However if this was a gig outside of school I would dress similar to Pete Doherty as seen below. He can be seen wearing Fred Perry below. The Libertines are a English rock band formed in the late 90s and can be recognised by Pete Doherty's unique style, a combination of suits and casual wear always displayed in his disheveled, gritty manor; an artistic embodiment of The Libertines music.
How will you make sure
it runs smoothly, organisation, anything extra you need and how will you get
it? `
Staging and equipment
needs:
- Guitar
- Amp
- Pedals
- Keyboard
- Amp
- Drum kit
What equipment do you
need and why?
We need Jack's guitar because he uses that in school as it is better than school ones and he is used to it, it also has a electric tuner and a capo attached which is useful and handy for onstage adjustments and pre performance as well. He uses a school amp as they are bigger with more watts than his, it is also impractical for him to bring his into school because of the size and weight. Jack carries a few pedals and jack cables in his guitar bag which are necessary for some of our songs we perform. Cameron uses a school keyboard and a school amp because he doesn't own either of them, and they seem adequate enough for him and it is more functional for him to use the schools. Lastly, I use the school's drum kits because it isn't a viable option for me to take mine to school, it would also be quite extreme to lug a drum kit around to school. I find it more difficult for me to play on the schools as the majority of the time I have to move things so I am able to play on it properly but I have accepted I will be using it for this course. It is time consuming rearranging a drum kit every time we practice but I have become speedy over the past year of the course so it is more efficient than playing on a kit that doesn't suit my playing.

What are the staging
requirements? E.g. space needed, placement of equipment etc.
We will need a stage big enough for the drum kit, two amps, keyboard with a stand and a seat with standing room for Jack. Most standard spaces of playing are enough. This means it is easy for us to practice and also perform when it comes to that.
